The segment is dead, the Ford Taurus probably isn’t getting a replacement, the Buick Lacrosse is fetching more money per unit for GM, and the few Impala buyers would be just as happy with a top spec Malibu.
Impala should become some sort of hybrid only/e.v./f.c.h.v. type of experimental vehicle.

Counterpoint: Impala sales YTD are only barely worse than the best selling light-duty alt-fuel vehicle (including hybrids, PHEVs, BEVs, and diesels), and nobody else has been particularly successful at making hybrid-only vehicles.
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/chevrolet-impala-sales-figures.html - 86,212 units YTD
http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/toyota-prius-sales-figures.html - 90,846 units YTD
GM will almost certainly sell more current Impalas than they would Prius-fighters under the Impala nameplate.
Oh, and they’re selling far, far more Impalas than LaCrosses, too. There may be some cannibalization going on, but still.

The segment may be on the downswing, but it’s not dead. There are still a lot of units being sold.

I would like to see an Impala with the specs to go up against a Taurus (AWD, 350+ hp), right now they’re not doing that. I’d much rather have an impala than a LaCrosse, Fwiw.

Semi-relatedly, I think the Malibu looks much better than the Impala in the booty department.

Counterpoint: in the luxury segment, the top selling vehicle is the Lexus RX. The next THREE are saloons.
#2) Mercedes-Benz C-Klasse
#3) BMW 3-Series
#4) Lexus ES

Counterpoint: They still sell an awful lot of them to rental cars companies.

Yeah the design of the impala kinda falls apart at the rear. It’s so bland and the tail lights are too small and generic for the rest of the car

Possibly fleet sales?

Counterpoint: Have you driven one? I had the top spec model while I was traveling for work for a week and it was awesome. Super comfortable and mildly quick (~300 hp) plus one night when the hotel fire alarm went off at 1am I contemplated sleeping in the back seat since it was so big and could watch netflix with the onboard 4G wifi .

I’m sure there are a decent amount of those, but GM has been very deliberately not chasing volume by dumping tons of cars into rental fleets. Nissan has become the king of that game.
I see lots of new Impalas around here. They’re pretty nice, look pretty good, and are really stinking comfortable.

Cousin of mine is a big shot at GM - can have anything in the lineup. I said try the SS, but he got another Cadillac. I’ll try again in 6 months. Before the Caddy, he was on a steady diet of LaCrosses and Lucernes.

I reeeeaalllly like the new LaCrosse.

Too much grille, beltline too high, but otherwise fine:

I’m digging the 2017 redesign.

Grille is a definite improvement, although I’d black out a lot of that chrome.
